When it comes to putting together a garden it is very easy to get so focused on the plants that you completely forget about everything else. But to make a nice garden really spectacular you also need to consider what is called hardscaping. This is basically all the parts of the garden that are not plants - such as fencing, stepping stones, and statues.
Stepping Stones
If you are planning a large garden then stepping stones will become very important just so that you can get into what I call the interior beds of your garden. They come in a large variety of colors and styles and you can always find ones to match your gardening style.
When you are laying stepping stones you can either lay a continuous path or you can lay them spaced apart. The big thing about placing them is that they should lead somewhere.
Statues and Sculptures
Statues and sculptures can add a sense of whimsy or elegance to your garden. When placing pieces like this don't overdo it. Either stick to one or two large pieces or group several small ones together. Most importantly make sure your garden statues reflect your personality.
Garden Fencing
I often refer to the fencing in your garden as its backbone. Fencing lends structure and interest to a garden and can really make your plants pop.
You can use a fence in two different ways: as a backdrop or as a border. It is best to do one or another and not mix them.Remembering the hardscaping in your garden can really make your garden stand out.
